Damascus and southwest Virginia are the perfect getaway for couples looking for the perfect romantic rendezvous, or for families looking to escape from it all with our beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and rich history.
Abingdon & Heartwood
A must stop on the Crooked Road of Southwest Virginia is the Heartwood in Abingdon. This new building was designed to present the music, crafts, and food of the area. There are four galleries that display and sell the works of the artisans from the Round the Mountain Artisan Network. You get to meet the artisans as well as see or purchase their work. They are the experts in clay, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, natural material, two-dimensional art, and wood.
Abingdon Vineyard & Winery
From Napa to Appalachia! Loren & Elizabeth Gardner grew up in California and discovered Abingdon Vineyards when they were helping their best friends move back to Virginia. The winery was started in 2001 by Bob Carlson and Janet Nordin, both retired engineers. This incredible team, along with many other friends and volunteers, work together to tend to the land, grapes, wine and our beloved guests. We love our community!

Backbone Rock Recreation Area
The Backbone Rock Recreation Area offers hiking, rappelling, camping, and fishing, including a hike with one trail leading across the top of the rock and another trail taking you to the beautiful 45 foot high Backbone Falls. Backbone Rock Recreation Area is a part of the Cherokee National Forest, a large National Forest created in 1920 encompassing over 655,000 acres.
Barter Theatre
You may not have expected world-class, professional theatre productions just 14 miles away from the small town of Damascus in Abingdon, Virginia. Barter Theatre, established in 1933, is a professional theatre company with 26 different shows performing in their current season. From February to December, a resident acting company of professional artists perform on two stages. The historic Barter Theatre main stage accommodates an audience of up to 506.

Bristol Motor Speedway
The Bristol Motor Speedway, located in Bristol, Tennessee, is just 36 miles from Damascus, Virginia. BMS is NASCAR racing’s most popular track. The track first opened in 1961 with over 165,000 seats. The Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the largest sporting arenas in the world. The track was first designed to be a smaller version of the 1.5 mile Charlotte Motor Speedway and the developers decided to create a half-mile facility.

Damascus Brewery is a small independent “craft brewery” or “microbrewery” located in Southwestern Virginia in the town of Damascus. Damascus Brewery is the first microbrewery for our town. Microbreweries (also known as craft breweries) are designated based on the overall scale of the operations, including the size of their individual batches.
