attract-contEnjoy the Virginia Creeper Trail, Mount Rogers National Recreational Area, golfing, fishing, and more with our Area Tourist Attractions!

MOUNT ROGERS NATIONAL RECREATION AREA: Damascus is more than the gateway to the high, wild, and lovely Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. This recreation area contains 150,000 acres, 5,729 foot high Mount Rogers, 300 miles of trails, 2 small lakes, 100 miles of trout streams both stocked and native, 66 miles of horse trails, and spectacular views from 5,540 foot high Whitetop Mountain.

Enjoy the relaxed lodging of the Damascus Inn and stay where you play.  This is not a chain hotel or motel you will find at home.  This 12 bed historic inn will have you feel like you are in a resort.

Many area attractions are closer to Damascus so spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time riding in a vehicle when you stay with us at The Old Mill Inn.

VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL: The Virginia Creeper Trail is the prettiest, easiest, 32 mile bicycle ride you will ever encounter.  It began as a Native American footpath, used by Daniel Boone, and later became the Virginia-Carolina Railroad running from Abingdon to Damascus, Virginia and was nicknamed the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Although the entire 32 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail is outstanding, the 17 miles from Whitetop to Damascus is absolutely incredible.  While only a 21 mile ride (35 minute van ride) from our hotel, it is over a 36 mile ride (55 minute van ride) from Abingdon.  Also, staying at the Old Mill Inn allows you to ride directly back to the bike shop and walk one block back to the Inn without waiting for a ride back to Abingdon.

The crushed limestone rail-trail gently descends for 17 miles from Whitetop to Damascus with never more than a 5% grade.  Traveling through lush forests, the forest canopy provides shade from the heat of the day, as you travel along pristine trout streams including the beautiful South Holston River.  A must do experience for anyone capable of riding a bike! Enjoy the beauty of the Virginia Creeper Trail today!

Fishing from the banks is usually easy and the stream can be waded easily.   Anglers can also enjoy the scenic mountain atmosphere while having the opportunity to catch brook, brown, and rainbow trout.

You can either fish on your own or use a local guide to find your personal spot.

GOLFING: The Damascus, Virginia area features 12 golf courses, including two award-winning locations. You can choose from either a 9-hole or 18-hole course, each with its own unique golf experience.
